# Ougiya

Places we stopped along the way　/　Kamakura, Kanagawa

A sweets shop dating back to the Edo period, a short walk along the tracks from Enoshima Station, in front of Ryukoji temple. A retired Enoden car sits out front, and station signboards and timetables decorate the interior. Its signature Enoden monaka comes in a box printed with the train, with "Enoden" stamped on the wafer in hiragana. There are several fillings; this time it was green tea bean paste with gyuhi inside. A banner also advertised kashiwa-mochi.

## This moment in the journey: A sweets shop by the tracks, with a real train car

Along the tracks I found a Japanese sweets shop with a real Enoden car parked out front. The destination sign on the green-painted car read "Enoden Monaka," and a banner advertised special kashiwa-mochi.

Inside, station signboards and old timetables decorated the walls, and boxes printed with the little train lined the showcase. Under the eaves hung a rusty old crossing signal, with a tiny pinwheel and a carp streamer swaying beside it. The shop staff carefully wrapped each piece.

They sell Japanese sweets with the cute retro train motif, so I bought some to take home. The moment I saw the words "Enoden Monaka" on the sign, today's snack was decided.
