Scooping up curry and rice with a spoon
Scooping up curry and rice with a spoon

A café attached to a guesthouse in the former Sanagi Elementary School, a wooden schoolhouse built in 1954. In what used to be the staff room I had the limited-quantity curry and ice cream made with locally grown figs. Traces of the school remain everywhere: school supplies on the shelves, an eye chart, and a red payphone turned into a donation box for cat kibble.

Curry in the staff room, fig ice cream

Curry and rice, served in what used to be the staff room. Chunks of meat in a sauce full of spices: a grown-up flavor. A wooden table, a white coffee cup.

For dessert, ice cream made with figs grown by local people, served in a glass dish with a round biscuit on the side.
